BIOSIGMA S.A. SELECTED FOUR PROJECTS IN THE FIRST OPEN CALL IN BIOTECHNOLOGY FOR MINING

On December 3rd 2002, BioSigma S.A. announced the final selection of projects presented in the First Call for Proposals for Research Projects in Biomining, which was announced on July 12th, 2002. A total of US$ 1 million will be spent in the next two years by the research groups led by:

  • Dr. Cecilia Demergasso at the Universidad Católica del Norte, Chile
  • Dr. Pamela Chávez at the Universidad de Antofagasta, Chile
  • Professors Tsuyoshi Sugio, Yasuhiro Konishi and Chihiro Inoue, at the Universities of Okoyama,Osaka-Prefecture and Tohuko, Japan, respectively.
  • Professors Alejandro Maas, Servet Martínez and Ricardo Baeza-Yates at the Centre of Mathematical Modeling, Universidad de Chile.

The projects were selected from the twenty one Outline Proposal received on July 12, 2002, and involve new approaches for Biohydrometallurgy processes using genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics to enhance bioleaching processes.

BioSigma is seeking successful research that will produce intellectual property rights of commercially applicable biological processes and technologies for mining, metalsand environmental markets in the short and medium term.
