Expected impacts

  • Reduce the inventory and final disposal of not-for-use (NFU) tires.
  • Contribute to the progressive closure of operations.
  • Capture value recovery opportunities, in line with the new requirements of the Extended Producer Responsibility Act.

Proposed solutions

  • Implement circular economy models to optimize the use of inputs throughout their life cycle.
  • Add value to by-products generated from NFUs.
  • Over the medium term, define a long-term solution that allows adding value to the inventory accumulated on our job sites efficiently and sustainably.
  • Ensure compliance with the Extended Producer Responsibility Act in the short term.
  • Pilot projects to use the by-products generated on the jobsites.

CLADDING PLATES IN THE MINISTER HALES DIVISION

One of the most ambitious projects related to NFU by-products is in the Minister Hales Division, where cladding plates made of recycled material are used in addition to reusing mining tires.

RECORD PERFORMANCE AT THE GABRIELA MISTRAL DIVISION

The extraction trucks at the Gabriela Mistral Division registered a record in tire performance in August 2020, reaching 10,903 hours and standing at 10% above the annual average, which results in cost containment and improvements in operation.

NFU RECYCLING TENDER

The tender process for the service that seeks to recycle more than 100% of the NFU waste generated yearly, approximately 12,000 tons of extraction truck tires throughout the Corporation, also includes recycling part of its existing environmental liabilities.
